What Would Dr. Lam Do?

This past June, I had the opportunity to attend Dr. Lam’s June workshop in Cincinnati, Ohio, supported with a scholarship awarded by the Community. In addition to learning the Sun 73 forms, I learned a great deal about the history and meaning of the movements. My instructors were amazing! Nuala Perrin, the epitome of kindness, patience, and understanding, could teach Tai Chi to any person, even klutzy, awkward people like me. Robin Malby is an awesome, impressive, and very thorough source of information on every movement and step. The combination of these two Master Trainers made the experience delightful and most memorable.

Dr. Lam’s knowledge, expertise, and benevolence personified the ultimate teacher of Tai Chi while the trainers carried on his philosophy and attitude. I didn’t just acquire techniques and strategies, I felt immersed in the magic of Tai Chi. Additionally, I had a great deal of fun. Betty Scanlon combined organization and proficiency with humor. Her Tai Chi Fan was hilarious.

My students, most of whom are octogenarians, have benefitted from my experience because they are more relaxed and having more fun in class. I try to imitate Dr. Lam’s attributes in all my dealings both in class and in my relations with other people. When I am feeling stressed, I ask myself, “What would Dr. Lam do or say in this situation?” Attending the summer workshop was not just an experience. It was a renewal of life.

Thank you USTCC members for this opportunity.
